Lake Edun
Lake Edun, an idyllic nude retreat located on the outskirts of Topeka, has for many years been an object of affliction for Shawnee County Counselor Richard Eckert. On Eckert's advice, Shawnee County Commissioners refused an extension to the Conditional Use Permit sought by property owners Webb and Julie Garlinghouse, and Eckert got a judge to issue an injunction that prevents the Garlinghouses from hosting commercial or recreational activities on their own property.

In 2006, the Libertarian Party of Kansas scheduled a political fund raiser at Lake Edun. Neither commercial nor recreational in nature, the event was clearly political free speech. Nevertheless, County Counselor Eckert had it blocked, using a show of force that involved more than a dozen Shawnee County Sheriff's deputies.

More recently, the County Counselor heard that a recreational event had taken place on the Lake Edun property. With a myopia and lack of due diligence that typifies those on a crusade, Eckert never bothered to verify his information. Instead, he rushed to file a 2007 lawsuit against the Garlinghouses, claiming they had violated the injunction by hosting the event. Actually, the event had never taken place, and Eckert was exposed as the misinformed zealot that he is.

The Naturist Action Committee continues to work closely with Webb and Julie Garlinghouse, as well as with the nonprofit Lake Edun Foundation, which leases the property.
